Mayor John F. Fitzgerald is inaugurated.

February 7, 1911

Breaking with the traditional practice of holding the ceremony in City Hall, Fitzgerald is inaugurated in Faneuil Hall. In his address, he declares, “No obligations to political organizations or to party leaders can now be urged as standing in the way of good government.” He also calls for creation of a “metropolitan council” made up of the mayors and chairman of the boards of selectmen from area cities and towns.
